Bones form the basic structure of our body. They perform a number of functions, such as providing calcium to our body, protecting delicate organs and form the basic structure upon which our muscles develop. Thus, it is very important to take care of our bone health and it cannot be neglected under any circumstances.
Importance Of Bone Health
Bone health is one of the basic things that every individual should be aware of. It is highly important for the physical well being of people. Our bones continuously replace themselves inside our body, that is, new bones are produced to replace the old bones that wear off. This process is faster when people are younger, but as they grow old, the rate of bone replacement slows down and one is more subject to problems such as osteoporosis, etc. This happens around the age of 30 in people, when they reach their maximum bone mass. Beyond this stage, bone mass may reduce, but never increase.
Factors Affecting Bone Health
There are a number of factors that affect bone health.
- Firstly, the amount of calcium in one’s diet is the most important determinant when it comes to bone health. In the case of a diet that is a deficit in calcium, one is more prone to bone-related diseases like osteoporosis. A healthy diet can be maintained by including plant-based calcium supplements for better bone health.
- Secondly, physical exercise also plays a key determining factor in the case of bone health. Highly active people have a higher chance of evading osteoporosis than people who refrain from exercising.
- Thirdly, addictions like alcohol and tobacco also harm one’s bone health- people addicted to alcohol and tobacco are prone to a higher risk of bone-related problems.
Gender, size, and age are also contributing factors to one’s subjectivity to bone health issues. Females are more prone to bone problems than their male counterparts due to a lower amount of bone tissue present in them. People above 30 are more likely to be worried about bone health than younger people. People with extremely petite body structures are also at the risk of bone health issues as there is not enough bone mass to draw from.
How To Take Care Of Bone Health
One of the basic things that can be done to prevent bone health issues is maintaining a diet that is rich in calcium. This can be done by including kale, broccoli, dairy products, almonds, soy proteins and salmon, sardines and tofu, etc in one’s diet.
However, including some items from this list may be impossible for vegetarian people. Thus, there is a solution for that as well. There are products that are plant-based calcium supplements for better bone health. These are made of magnesium, silica, strontium, and boron, etc which help one receive the whole spectrum of vegetative nutrients that act as a supplement for proteins rich in calcium and are thus, bone building minerals.
Other things that can be done to maintain bone health are regular physical activity and paying proper attention to Vitamin D in one’s body.
